South Australia's $2,000 IVF Rebate: Who Qualifies, What it Covers & How to Claim it

Key Takeaways
South Australia now has its first-ever state-funded fertility treatment rebate scheme, available from 1 July 2026
Eligible South Australian residents can claim up to $2,000 per IVF cycle for up to two cycles, plus a separate $250 rebate for pre-fertility treatment testing
The rebate applies on top of your existing Medicare IVF rebate, reducing your total out-of-pocket costs
To qualify, you need to meet SA residency requirements, be receiving treatment for a fertility issue, and meet one of three financial eligibility criteria
FertilitySA is an accredited SA fertility provider, meaning patients treated here are eligible to apply
What is the SA IVF Rebate?
Trying to conceive isn't always straightforward, and for many South Australians, understanding the cost of fertility treatment is one of the first questions that comes up. Even after the standard Medicare IVF rebate is applied, there are still out-of-pocket costs that need to be considered. For those who need more than one cycle, those costs can add up.

From 1 July 2026, there is now financial support available to help. The Government of South Australia is committing $18.5 million over four years to provide financial relief for the out-of-pocket costs associated with fertility tests and treatments, supporting South Australians to start or grow their families. It is the state's first Fertility Treatment Rebate Scheme, and it marks a genuine step forward for making fertility care more accessible across SA.

Infertility affects approximately one in six Australian couples who try to conceive, with IVF costs often creating a barrier to access. If cost has been a factor in your decision, this scheme is worth understanding.
How Much Can You Claim?
From 1 July 2026, South Australian residents will be able to access a $250 rebate for eligible pre-fertility treatment testing and a $2,000 rebate for eligible fertility treatment cycles for up to two cycles.
To put that into practical terms: if your first IVF cycle leaves you with approximately $6,700 in out-of-pocket costs after Medicare, the SA fertility rebate brings that down to around $4,700. Across two cycles, eligible patients could save up to $4,000 through the scheme.
The $250 pre-fertility treatment testing rebate is available separately and can be claimed in addition to the treatment rebate. So if you complete testing before beginning a cycle, you may be eligible for both. It’s important to note that the pre-fertility testing rebate is only applicable when ordered by specialists, not your regular GPs.
Who is Eligible for the SA IVF Rebate?
To be eligible for the rebate, you must be a South Australian resident, be the person seeking to become pregnant using fertility treatment, have incurred an out-of-pocket expense for an eligible pre-fertility test or fertility treatment cycle, be receiving testing or treatment for a fertility issue, and have accessed the testing or treatment from 1 July 2026.

It is worth noting that while eligible fertility tests can be for either a male or female partner, only the individual seeking to become pregnant is permitted to submit an application.
You must also meet one of the following financial eligibility criteria: receive Family Tax Benefit, have a Health Care Card (including a Low Income Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card), or have a household income of $180,000 or less.

If you are not sure whether you qualify, the FertilitySA team here can help you work through your eligibility before you begin treatment. You can also contact the SA Fertility Treatment Rebate Scheme directly on 08 8372 7578 or at fertilityrebate@sa.gov.au.
What Does the Rebate Cover and What it Doesn't?
The SA fertility treatment rebate applies to out-of-pocket IVF cycle costs, specifically the costs remaining after your Medicare IVF rebate has already been claimed. It works alongside Medicare, not instead of it.

How Does the SA Rebate Stack With Medicare?
The SA fertility treatment rebate is designed to sit on top of the existing federal Medicare support, not replace it. For SA patients, there are now three layers of financial support that can work together to reduce the total cost of your fertility treatment.
Layer 1: Medicare IVF Rebate
Medicare covers a portion of IVF-related costs through the Medicare Benefits Schedule. This is claimed first and reduces your initial out-of-pocket expense.
Layer 2: Medicare Safety Net
Once your out-of-pocket Medicare costs reach $2,615.50 in a calendar year, the Medicare Safety Net increases the rebate you receive on subsequent Medicare-claimable services. For those going through multiple cycles or transfers within a single year, this can provide additional savings.
Layer 3: SA Fertility Treatment Rebate
The new state rebate applies to remaining out-of-pocket costs after Medicare has been claimed. At up to $2,000 per cycle across two cycles, this is the most significant new addition to the financial support available for SA fertility patients.

Used together across two IVF cycles, these three layers can make a real difference to what you pay out-of-pocket. Your care team at FertilitySA can help you understand how each layer applies to your individual treatment plan.
How to Claim the SA IVF Rebate
The SA Fertility Treatment Rebate Scheme opened for applications on 1 July 2026. The process involves three straightforward steps
Step 1
Download the declaration form
Download the Pre-Fertility Treatment Testing Rebate Declaration Form and/or the Fertility Treatment Rebate Declaration Form from the SA Health website, or phone 08 8372 7578 and ask for a form to be sent to you.
Step 2
Complete the form with your specialist
Complete and sign the declaration form with your FertilitySA Specialist - you will be able to confirm all costs at this stage based on your individual treatment plan.
Step 3
Submit your application
To apply, visit the Concessions and Grants section at sa.gov.au.
A few practical things to keep in mind: hold onto all receipts from your treatment and testing from 1 July 2026 onwards, and make sure your Medicare claims are processed before submitting, as the rebate applies to costs remaining after Medicare has been claimed.
