Frequently Asked Questions
IUI (Intrauterine Insemination) is a procedure where prepared sperm is placed directly into the uterus around the time of ovulation. IUI treatment is often recommended for couples with unexplained infertility, in cases of mild male factor infertility, or for those using donor sperm.
Medicare benefits are available for eligible recipients where assisted reproductive technology (including IUI) is considered necessary to treat a patient’s medical infertility. While some aspects of the process may be covered by Medicare, other tests or procedures can incur additional costs. At Fertility SA, we will provide you with a clear idea of costs and Medicare rebates available to you, dependent upon your particular circumstances.
IUI costs vary depending on your specific treatment plan, any Medicare rebates you may be entitled to, and any coverage you may have through private health insurance. At Fertility SA, all of our costs and rebates are transparent, and you will be provided with a clear, individualised cost estimate.
IUI treatment can increase the chance of pregnancy by making it easier for the sperm to reach an egg, as it cuts down on the time and distance it has to travel. The IUI process is often tried before other more invasive fertility treatments, and IUI’s chances of success can be increased by using fertility drugs to help promote ovulation.
IUI success rates vary according to the age of the patient, but 2019 data from The Australia and New Zealand Assisted Reproduction Database (ANZARD) reports that the average percentage of clinical pregnancies per IUI cycle across all age groups is 15.8%. IUI chances of success become higher with cumulative cycles. It is important to note that IUI is not effective for certain causes of infertility, so it is important to discuss with a fertility specialist whether IUI will be right for you.
IUI is not considered surgery. It is a procedure that is often likened to having a cervical screening test (PAP smear), and does not usually require anaesthesia. Most people are able to get on with their day after the procedure, with minimal disruption.
You can return to normal activities after having the IUI procedure, and this can include having sexual intercourse. If bleeding occurs, it is recommended to wait at least 48 hours before having intercourse.
A healthy diet can positively impact male and female fertility preservation. So for the best chances of IUI success, patients should follow a diet that includes a healthy balance of fruit and vegetables, grains and cereals, lean protein sources (such as meat, fish, eggs, tofu, nuts, seeds) and dairy or dairy alternatives. Pay particular attention to ensuring an adequate intake of protein, omega-3 fatty acids, iron and calcium, and be sure to remain well hydrated.
Comprehensive IUI Services Available At Fertility SA
Fertility SA provides a complete range of services to support IUI, including consultation and testing, treatment and post-treatment care, all accessible in one central location.
IUI Consultation
IUI treatment is often recommended in cases of unexplained infertility, where there is mild male factor infertility, and for those using donor sperm. However, IUI is not suitable in all cases, and our initial consultation is designed to assess whether IUI is right for you.
At your first appointment, we will take a detailed medical history and may order further fertility tests, before providing you with a tailored treatment plan. This initial consultation is bulk-billed for eligible patients, while tests and future treatments may involve additional costs.
IUI Procedure Explained
The IUI procedure increases the chances of successful pregnancy by introducing the sperm straight into the uterine cavity, and thereby helping increase the amount of fertile sperm reaching the uterus. The process also optimises the sperm sample before insemination, which helps address male infertility issues such as a low sperm count or motility.
Sperm is first prepared by selecting the healthiest, most mobile sperm. Ovulation tracking is then used to identify the ideal time for insemination, and at the appropriate time, the sperm is inserted through the cervix into the uterus using a catheter. This process generally takes a few minutes, and is usually no more uncomfortable than a routine pap smear.
Following insemination, patients may rest briefly, then can generally get on with their usual day-to-day activities. A pregnancy test will be performed around two weeks later.
Hormonal & Fertility Monitoring
To ensure insemination coincides perfectly with ovulation, we undertake ultrasounds, blood tests and sometimes urine tests, to identify your fertile window. At Fertility SA, we offer three cycles of Ovulation Tracking bulk-billed, meaning no out of pocket cost for Medicare card holders.
We also use blood tests to monitor reproductive hormone levels including Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH), Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH), Luteinising Hormone (LH), and Estradiol. These tests provide valuable information about ovarian reserve, ovulatory function, and overall reproductive health, allowing us to further align treatment with your specific fertility profile.
