Trusted & Comprehensive IVF Process Available At Fertility SA
The fertility treatment journey can feel confusing and overwhelming. Our team of specialists and counsellors will work with you to determine the most appropriate treatment path, and to ensure you feel fully informed and supported at all times.
IVF Consultation
At your initial consultation appointment, our fertility specialist will take a comprehensive medical history, discuss your goals, and undertake a physical exam if necessary. Based on this consultation, we may recommend various fertility tests to get a clear picture of your reproductive health. This initial consultation is bulk-billed for eligible patients, while tests and future treatments may involve additional costs.
Egg Retrieval & Embryo Transfer
Your fertility specialist will work with you to develop a personalised treatment plan. You may decide to embark on IVF treatment, where eggs are fertilised with sperm outside the body. IVF is the most common form of assisted reproduction, as it can overcome many barriers to natural conception and is suitable for a variety of fertility issues.
The IVF process begins with ovarian stimulation, followed by egg retrieval and sperm collection. The eggs are then placed in a dish with the sperm and left to fertilise in our laboratory. The resulting embryos are cultured in our incubator before the best quality embryo is transferred to the uterus and any remaining embryos are frozen for future use.
At every stage of this process, our team will be there for you, providing clear instructions, emotional support, and answering any questions you may have.
Hormonal & Fertility Monitoring
At Fertility SA, we use various monitoring processes to give you the best chance of success. To start with, we offer three cycles of bulk-billed Ovulation Tracking, with no out of pocket cost for Medicare card holders. These tests help identify your fertile window, through regular ultrasounds to monitor follicle growth, blood tests to measure hormone levels, and sometimes urine tests to detect the luteinising hormone (LH) surge.
Hormonal monitoring further allows us to access valuable information about ovarian reserve, ovulatory function, and overall reproductive health, and helps us tailor our treatment approach to best suit your needs. We do this via blood tests that measure various reproductive hormones, including Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH), Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH), Luteinising Hormone (LH), and Estradiol.
Frequently Asked Questions
Bulk-billed IVF is available to Australian citizens or permanent residents who are eligible for Medicare, and who limit certain criteria set by the IVF clinic.
IVF costs in Adelaide vary depending on your specific treatment plan, out-of-pocket expenses after Medicare bulk billing, and any coverage you may have through private health insurance. At Fertility SA, all of our costs and rebates are transparent, and you will be provided with a clear, individualised cost estimate.
The success of the IVF process can be measured in a number of ways. You can get a sense of the overall chance of a live birth from any given egg retrieval cycle, by looking at births per complete egg retrieval cycle. The national average for this ratio is 47.9% for females younger than 35 years, and 25.8% for females 35-42 years. However, Fertility SA gives patients access to Genea’s cutting edge fertility technology, which consistently delivers higher-than-average IVF success rates.
It is important to note that many factors contribute to the likelihood of achieving pregnancy or live birth, including the cause of infertility, lifestyle factors and age.
In Australia, gender selection through IVF is no longer legal except in certain medical cases, such as to avoid genetic illnesses associated with a particular gender. Having a preference for a particular gender, or balancing a family, are not considered acceptable reasons for gender selection.
Implantation of an embryo after IVF usually occurs 1–5 days after transfer. The process of implantation generally takes around 5 days to complete, but it is generally recommended to wait around two weeks post-transfer before taking a pregnancy test, as it can take time for hCG (the pregnancy hormone) to reach detectable levels.
After an IVF embryo transfer, the embryo hopefully implants in the uterine lining and begins to grow. Your treating team will provide you with instructions on post-treatment care, and a pregnancy test will be carried out approximately 2 weeks after transfer. If treatment is successful, you will be provided with early pregnancy monitoring and support. If unsuccessful, a review appointment will be scheduled where you can discuss next steps. At Fertility SA, we understand how challenging this time can feel, and offer ongoing support and counselling to help you through it.
The number of IVF cycles you can do in a year depends on several factors, including individual health, response to treatment, financial considerations, and advice from your fertility specialist. It is generally recommended to wait at least one full menstrual cycle between treatments to allow the body time to recover. Most patients can safely undergo 3 to 4 IVF cycles per year. If there are health concerns such as high hormone levels, or if ovarian stimulation is particularly hard on the body, your fertility specialist may suggest fewer cycles.
